Introduction

100 Things I Wish I Knew in My Baby's First Year is the result of our crash course in parenting. We were blessed with the birth of three children within one year. Our son was born in April of 2001 and our son and daughter twins came along in the fall of the same year. This sudden gift of so many babies resulted in an intense course in parenting. Changing thirty diapers a day helped us to perfect our skills and find ways to make even the simplest tasks easier.

The recommendations that we provide in this book started with our own observations about what worked and what didn't work with our babies. We received excellent advice from some of the best parents that we know and have passed this wisdom on in several of our topics. Because we are giving advice on a subject that we know is incredibly important, our observations alone were not enough. In addition to relying on our real life experience, we read countless books and articles by prominent researchers, pediatricians, and infant specialists. For instance, while working on the topic of pain relievers we reviewed and summarized over twenty studies about the effectiveness of different pain relievers for infants.

100 Things I Wish I Knew in My Baby's First Year covers a wide variety of information about parenting. Several of the items address sleep issues. Getting your baby to sleep through the night and develop good sleep habits is one of the most important goals in your baby's first year. Our experience has been that a family cannot function at its best if the baby in the house is having sleep problems. After discussing sleep problems with a great many parents we found that infant sleep problems were the number one area of concern of most parents. Fortunately, sleep problems can be avoided by starting your baby out right. Even if you are picking this book up when your baby is six months old, our suggestions can help you get your baby's sleep problems back under control.

This book is organized chronologically. The book begins with topics that relate to birth and newborns and ends with items that are important as your baby reaches nine to twelve months of age. Each topic is designed to stand on its own and has been kept as short as possible to help a busy new parent. Whether you are reading this book while you are expecting, just after delivery, or six month's after your baby's birth we believe you will find information that will make parenting easier and Baby Happier.

Happy parenting!
